[...] Don’t start writing the business case to move to a complete session bases cookie tracking system yet. Comscore only surveyed one site and that with their panel of users who are provided spyware tools that may or may not recommend the removal of 1st party cookies. See Eric Peterson’s Blog for more on that. [...]

[...] Otherwise, we’re left with the “damned statistics” and the perception of the first part too (lies, lies). I have no way of knowing if ComScore’s recent data is representative of the Internet population or if the data is simply representative of the “frame” they sampled using whatever clever method. Even the answers to Eric’s questions left more questions.
[...] Comparing comScore to Collected Data Published April 23rd, 2007 in Web Analytics and Cookie Deletion. There has been a lot of great discussion about comScore’s recent press release in the yahoo group and the blogs this past week. Two post that particularly caught my eye were responses from comScore to questions by Eric Peterson about their methodology and the promise they will be releasing more information soon and Marshall Sponder’s post where he looks at what reducing the measured Visitor numbers by a factor of 2.5 could mean to the numbers published by some of the bigger online retail sites.
The issue is coverage error, a type of selection bias. While I haven't read the letter beyond this leak, I would agree with and would support Mr Rothenberg's actions and good intentions.

I just keep wondering how the picture changes when you add in cookie rejection rates. Are first party cookies just as likely to be rejected as 3rd?

I also wonder where the IAB Cookie Management Taskforce is with their research.

If comScore used only one publisher, I hope it was Yahoo! Time Warner or Microsoft so that it was a representative sample (those conglomerates drawing the most visitors and thus most reflective of the internet audience as a whole).
